Introduction of Prickly Pear Extract

Cactus extract powder (especially extract from Opuntia dillenii or Opuntia ficus indica) is a light yellow to brownish yellow fine powder extracted from the entire cactus plant (including stem, fruit, and root).It is mainly composed of polysaccharides, flavonoids (such as quercetin-3-glucoside), triterpenoid saponins, and propanoid acid. It has various biological activities.People can widely use it in health products, functional foods, and skincare products.

The core benefits of this extract include:

Regulation of blood sugar: Flavonoids can improve the glucose metabolism of patients with type II diabetes.Meanwhile it can reduce the fluctuation of postprandial blood sugar.

Superoxide dismutase (SOD) is a metal enzyme widely present in animals, plants. Microorganisms SOD as an effective scavenger of free radicals in the body, can dynamically balance the formation and elimination of free radicals. Thereby resisting the toxic effects of O2- . According to research conducted by the Department of Biological Sciences and Technology at Tsinghua University and the Joint Laboratory of Traditional Chinese Medicine Modernization Research at Hong Kong Baptist Universit. The SOD activity in cactus palm is equivalent to that in bovine hemoglobin.

The content of SOD in cactus extract is more than twice that in bovine hemoglobin and more than seven times that in milk. It has significant anti-aging and immune enhancing effects . Given that cactus is rich in SOD, this study aims to explore the extraction method of SOD in cactus and preliminarily explore its activity determination.
